COMPOST CARE

Since fall 2022, Klasse für Alle has been looking after a compost heap in the Angewandte courtyard at Oskar Kokoschka Platz 2.
On Fridays from 3–5 pm, the compost collective* organizes and hosts a regular COMPOST CARE there, where practical and metaphorical methods of composting are learned together, deepened and practiced for everyday practice. The compost care events are open to everyone.

We bring organic materials for our compost and take care of the rotting process as well as the garden surrounding the compost heap. In this caring interaction with the nature around us, we gain a deeper understanding of natural cycles and the ecosystems that surround us and realize how close the more-than-human-beings actually are to us (the worms, fungi, bacteria involved in the rotting process; the mycorrhizae that form the deeper networks). We translate these experiences into similar composting processes and through cultural and craft techniques from reading, (deep) listening, writing, moving, spinning, working with clay and paper, to cooking and fermenting. An understanding of craft and artistic processes in turn helps us to better understand the more-than-human beings and their workings.

The compost collective was founded in 2022 in Klasse für Alle as the compost group and has developed a practice of compost care that, in addition to practical composting, also develops and practices techniques such as deep listening, recording, writing, moving, reading, fermenting, braiding and much more. The members of the collective organize workshops on these topics and integrate composting as a practice into their everyday lives.
